Regular listeners of our podcast should know by now that I am an avid Dragon Quest fanboy, for better and for worse. I’ve played through the greatest entries in the franchise (Dragon Warrior and Dragon Quest VIII) and also suffered through some of the less reputable ones, most notably Dragon Quest: Swords for the Wii (which I maintain to this day is a better game than most people give it credit for.) Having said that, it should come as no surprise that I am rejoicing at the news that Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies is finally making it to West.
What do we have to look forward to with the latest game in the series? A plethora of new features will bring an unprecedented level of interaction for players of DQ 9. The ability to team up with three friends via the DS wireless connection; the ability to customize the look and feel of the main character through a new character creation tool and a “job” system that allows you to change classes at any time; the ability to share treasure maps and character stats with others; and my personal favorite: the additional quests that will be available for download after the game launches. Those quests will both act as standalone side quests and further the main storyline, all for the low, low price of… nothing!
Dragon Quest IX is the biggest selling DS game to date in Japan, and I, for one, have high hopes that it will make a tremendous impact on the Western markets. The Dragon Quest franchise historically has not done as well in America and Europe as it has in Japan, but hopefully this entry in the series will change that.
The current release date has been set for July 11 in America and July 23 in Europe. Go buy it on day-one and show your support for this great franchise!
