For me, Tumble was my killer app, I bought the Move, as well as a PSN card, so this could be my first experience with Sony’s new motion controller. I was unsure if it would just be Boom Blox again, or if it was merely a tech demo. In this case, it’s neither.
Tumble is a puzzle game, in which you solve physics based puzzles involving different shapes, the most common of which is stacking a tower. At first, it sounds simple, but it isn’t. The blocks come in all shapes and sizes, forcing you to think carefully about each placement. The blocks also have different properties; some may have different weights, be slippery, or have extra grip. There are many other types of challenges as well beyond this main mechanic. Early on it teaches you the basics of how the blocks work, and how each challenge is to be played out. Then it flips you out by throwing fans blowing wind, rotating platforms, floating bars you have to build around, and even earthquakes!
The beauty of this game, however, is it’s ability to make you say “just one more.” Every time you clear a level without earning a gold medal, there’s that little feeling deep down that silver just won’t do and you need that gold. It has a good balance of challenging you, and then rewarding you for your efforts once you decipher the solution.
The game has 12 zones and over 100 levels. You must earn a certain amount of medals in the levels of each zone to unlock the next one. Medals range from bronze to gold as well as some additional secret medals. You don’t have to earn every medal to proceed to the next round, only the bare minimum.
If you own Move then this is a must buy. If you’re looking for incentive to own Move, this is a solid reason. They have done an amazing job of making it feel like you’re placing objects inside the screen, and the addictive and fun levels will keep you coming back for more. I’ve gotten the gold medal on the last level, so I feel I have a good understanding of the game, but I have the drive to spend many more hours trying to get 100% on each zone.
