Hey guys! It's been quite a long time!

I know I haven't been around much in the past 6 months (even on Twitter,) and as of a week ago, I live about 25-30 minutes north of Wisconsin Dells in Mauston, WI, but I'm trying to get back into the swing of things now.

Anywho, the real reason I'm writing this post is to congratulate you guys on the progress you have made with The GOO. I couldn't be more happy for you that you have been able to officially announce, plan, and prepare for the Days of GOO event, and you'd better believe that I will be there no matter what- come hell or high water.

Hope all is well!

With all the Dead Space 2 love in the top 5 segment this week I need to really start playing that, but just like Scott it would probably take me too long.

Great show as always gents even though I missed Leo. Nice that he contributed with a call in however.

If we're talking art in game, I'm really surprised that Ico doesn't feature. I suppose if I was only listing one PS1 or PS2 game I'd tear my hair out in frustration trying to pick a winner, but Ico would make my shortlist.
...and timespliters...and FFIIV...and GTA VC...and oh bugger it.

Nice. I'm pleased to see this post. As one of the five Front Mission fans outside of Japan, this is great news for me. Front Mission is Square's most under-appreciated series, and it's too bad that 2 and 5 never got English localizations.

I think that it looks very cool. I'm glad that they have the option to "tone it down" if you want. And the no-glasses aspect is amazing! I can't wait to get my hands on one and actually see the 3D, but I'm hopeful that it will lead to bigger and better things, like Star Wars-esque holograms :)

Your last paragraph is kind of my point. If it's not for you, now, that's fine, but chances are we'll all take an interest once it's built-in or just part of our homes.

Where we differ is that I don't think it has to be a novelty. I think - in time - it will be another form of expression and another tool in the developer's toolbox.

Nice article Vassi, but as Tom Hanks says in BIG - I just don't get it. I don't want to join the Hate train, but I really don't fancy sitting for hours in front of my TV with some daft glasses on, and it'll ruin the already diminishing idea of local co-op in gaming. Am I the only one who remembers the staggering failure of 3D on the Sega Master System? OutRun 3D was just terrible, mainly because what is meant to be immersive ends up having the opposite effect. Of course the tech now is much better, but I still think the idea remains that once you realise the eye is being tricked your interest in the action/story takes second place. Avatar is the perfect example - an awesome cinematic spectacle but a long-winded and weak story.

I reckon the only time I'm likely to take an interest in 3d is when it's so cheap its standard. By that time the novelty will have worn off and people will be judging games on gameplay and storyline again.

It hit the EU store this week fellas, so I'll warrant you'll see it stateside before too long. I'm pleased because I also didn't finish the game. Heck, I'd barely started it by the time my shiny new PS2 came along and poor FF9 got left by the wayside. This was the last final fantasy to have a genuine world map to explore. 10 was an incredible let-down for me. I'll be playing this on my PSP.

I can confirm it has the same price point as 7 & 8 too.

Interesting article! The only one I've played on this list is FF3. And I agree, it's a pain! I got a good ways into it and opened up a lot of jobs. I enjoyed what I played of it, but it just got to tedious.

Overall, the linearity of a game, or lack thereof, needs to serve the player's experience. In general, Final Fantasies are about you playing a key role in a world much larger than you, your party or the town your in. However, it's the little details, like the ability to talk to everyone in a town, that are what really make the world feel grand and expansive. The lack of towns or NPC interactions would effect my enjoyment of the game much more than the amount of side quests I may or may not get to.

Also, some titles are enhanced by being linear. Wouldn't the revenge saga of Kratos get watered down if you could deviate from your goal by wandering around for hours on end doing side quests?

Then of course there are games that straddle the boundary between linear and open world, like Shadow of the Colossus. I'm in the midst of playing through this epic for the first time. It has a perfect mix of straightforward main storyline that takes place in a open world setting with a myriad of nooks and crannies that can be explored.

There can't be a golden rule for game structure. Not every RPG needs to be open world and not every action game needs to be linear. These elements need to be gel with the rest of the game's design in order to produce an overall enjoyable experience.

Great article! I know myself as a father of two (5 and 2), I still play games regularly. The issue I ran into more than time is money. My spouse and I were never rolling in cash before the kids but afterwards it is even tougher to afford new games. I only own the Wii and 360 and I really have to do a ton of research prior to purchasing. A purchase usually needs to meet a few criteria such as 15+ hr RPG with replayability, good online multiplayer, or just a huge fan of the subject marerial. So I only buy about 4-5 games a year. However I play alot of games because the advice I am about to give you has been the biggest in my life a s a gamer with children : GameFly is your best friend!!! I have given up my collecting habits just so I can play more than 5 games a year. Without GameFly I would have missed great titles like Bayonetta, Ghostbusters, Batman, Punch Out, Mad World, ect.

So in closing my situation was more about being able to support my hobby finacially more so than time, although the kids do require the pause button to be pressed more than ever before.

I think the rant on how hard FFXI was was hysterical. The fact that the radish killed you totally, totally had me laughing because I'd forgotten about those fricken things.

But, you know, they came back in Crisis Core on PSP. When I saw them I gasped, and when they put my guy to sleep and cleaned his clock at the end of a mission I got angry again.
