Dragon Quest 9 coming to the West

Regular listeners of our podcast should know by now that I am an avid Dragon Quest fanboy, for better and for worse. I’ve played through the greatest entries in the franchise (Dragon Warrior and Dragon Quest VIII) and also suffered through some of the less reputable ones, most notably Dragon Quest: Swords for the Wii (which I maintain to this day is a better game than most people give it credit for.) Having said that, it should come as no surprise that I am rejoicing at the news that Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies is finally making it to West. [Read more...]

Review: 3D Dot Game Heroes

Retro gaming has been seeing a lot of love lately. Games like Megaman 10 and Final Fight: Double Impact have breathed new life into their respective series; re-releases of classics like Wolfenstein 3D on XBLA and PSN and the plethora of games out via the Wii’s Virtual Console have introduced a generation of younger gamers to gems that they may have missed out on the first time around. It is in that vein that the people at From Software have given us their latest creation: 3D Dot Game Heroes.

Nintendo releases Classic Controller Pro to the U.S.

Yesterday Nintendo of America released the Classic Controller Pro to the United States. It features two rows of shoulder buttons and a new, wider and more ergonomically satisfying grip. And for the same $19.99 price tag as the first gen Classic Controllers, to boot. For the first time I’m looking forward to a Wii accessory. [Read more...]

Top 5 Hardest GBA/DS Games

I know that I originally said in my “Top 5 Hardest GB/GBC Games” that I was going to write similar articles pertaining to both the Gameboy Advance and the DS, but upon further review I couldn’t come up with five good, ludicrously difficult titles from either portable system. I’m sure that both systems have games hard enough to qualify for a more individualized list, but my exposure to both the GBA and the DS is slightly limited; at least in comparison to the earlier Nintendo portables. Having said that, I decided to combine the two lists into one. So, without further adieu, my Top 5 Hardest GBA and DS games:

Top 5 Hardest Game Boy/GBC Games

The current series of Top 5 lists that Scott and I are doing in the lead-up to MGC 2010 has been good thus far, but something that we have skipped over entirely has been the portable systems. Hence, I am going to be doing a web-only series of Top 5s detailing what I think are the most difficult Game Boy, GBA, and DS games that I ever played. I would love to include the other portable systems, but my severe lack of experience with them somewhat precludes me from doing so.

The Nintendo Controller

Today I had to make a trip to my local Goodwill store to drop off a couple of boxes of the random things that tend to accumulate in my house. After visiting the donation side, I figured that I would walk through the store to see what it had in stock. Hidden away in a small box on the back wall was a treasure trove of various video games and accessories from years past. [Read more...]

First Impressions of MadWorld

New Year’s Day is fast approaching, which means that the long holiday season is over for most of us. With that in mind, I’m going to take a moment to talk about one of my favorite new pick ups of the season which I grabbed from the super-cheap clearance bin at one of the big box stores. That game is MadWorld for the Wii. [Read more...]

REVIEW: Torchlight

Context:

I’ve played over 40 hours of Torchlight, split between three different characters. I have a character with each of the game’s classes, but I have definitely devoted the most time to my Alchemist. He is in the 32nd floor of the dungeon at the time of this writing, while the other two characters (Destroyer and Vanquisher) are hovering around the 10th floor. If you’ve been keeping up to date with the GOO podcast, you probably already know just how much of a fan of Torchlight I am (and how addicted, as well). And really, it isn’t that hard to become hooked on a game as good as this one is for its genre.

Story:

(Pretext: Each of the character classes has a slight variation in the story at the onset of the game, but your choice does not affect the plot thereafter; each class has to fight the same baddies and bosses along the way.) [Read more...]

Megaman 10 coming to the Wii

It has been announced via the Nintendo Power website that Megaman 10 will be coming to the Wii. (Some visuals can be found here.) How do I feel about this?

I love it!

When Megaman 9 hit the consoles there was a huge uproar about it, both from fans and detractors (I’d like to think that more positive things were said than negative, but perhaps my eyes are a bit clouded). The retro 8-bit action brought back memories and also created some new ones. Sure, it was a hard game. But so were the first three in the series, way back on the NES.

I’ve been a huge fan of the mighty blue bomber since I first played the original over 20 years ago, and I could not be more excited for another retro-looking, no-sliding, hard-as-hell addition to the series.
