Fine Tuning the Shark: The Do’s and Don’ts of Strategy RPGs

On the evolutionary tree of role-playing games strategy RPGs (SRPGs) are akin to the shark, consistent in design and functional in practice with the ability to tear you apart if you’re not careful. First, the easy to understand, board game-like principles lure you in. However, before you can get away the various upgrade, equipment and party systems pull your attention in a myriad of directions while the difficulty ramps up forcing you to face enemies with HPs approaching the size of the national debt. While not for every gamer, strategy RPGs have found their niche with legendary titles such as Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Disgaea. Even the older or lesser-known titles, such as Shining Forces, Vandal Hearts, Gladius and Stella Deus provide conventions that have impacted the genre. The best SRPGs possess mechanics that move the genre forward, though even these cling to some outmoded vestiges that hearken back to earlier games. So here is a wish list of DO’s and DON’Ts that preserve the entertaining aspects of SRPGs without bogging down with the extraneous elements that often turn people away from this amazingly deep genre. Exclusive Dhalsim T-Shirt with SSF4 preorders at UK website

British online retailer shopto.net are offering a nice Dhalsim T-Shirt with preorders of Super Street Fighter IV.  It could mean American gamers will look to import from Europe for a change.  Will it be enough though to entice fighting game noobs like myself to take the plunge into this hyper-competitive highly skilled game?  I fear you who have played this for the last 19 months, I FEAR YOU!

Who’s the Daddy? How Parenthood Changes the Gamer

As we get older, the real world has a defining impact on our gaming vocation.  In the same way floating Medusa heads or jumping robotic fish got in the way of our childhood avatars, a job, home and other commitments can conspire to hold us back from spending the time we would like in our adult lives servicing our joystick addiction.  The days of a 7th playthrough of our favorite RPG, or choosing full season mode in a sports sim are diminishing.  Aren’t they?  (more…)

A Handy Reminder: There Was Life Prior to Gaming

Sony seems to be about 3700+ days behind the curve when it comes to this whole Y2K bug, but according to a bunch of reported issues with non-Slim PS3’s today, there seems to be a fundamental issue with 2010 not being a leap year.  Now most of the actual causes are of course, only known by devs at Sony, but damned if the internet doesn’t have everything figured out automatically.  According to the latest info straight from Sony, they’re hoping that everything will be wrapped up in 24 hours.  Before you go all WTFOMGZORZ on me due to the lack of your daily digital additction, remember that there was a time when fresh air was a good thing, talking to someone without a device was truly being connected, and that you’re hopefully mature enough to show some patience.  I’m sure Sony will figure it out.  At the very worst, maybe they’ll just offer new machines through a warranty instead of fixing the real problem.  No company would ever do that.  Ever.  I swear.

Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising Goes Gold

According to a press release February 22nd, THQ announced that fans of the successful RTS Warhammer 40,000 franchise, Dawn of War, won’t have to wait long to see the newest installment.  As a followup to Dawn of War II, Chaos Rising is a brand new Games for Windows Live standalone expansion at a very reasonable cost of $29.99 US.  It boasts a brand new playable race, the Chaos Space Marines, a raised level cap from 20 to 30, a brand new campaign, more multiplayer options, and of course, phat new loots!  If you haven’t tried out the original Dawn of War II, I highly suggest picking up the demo – haters of RTS who are fans of dungeon crawlers may be surprisingly interested in the single player and co-op.

“Chaos Rising is the perfect follow up to Dawn of War II, 2009’s RTS Game of the Year, offering an incredible amount of new content for an amazing value.”
– Travis Plane, Vice President of Global Brand Management, THQ.

Now the real question is with a release date of March 11th, two days after Final Fantasy XIII, will anyone really care?  I loved the first, and I’m hoping I do, but I honestly don’t know the answer to that one.

Let us know what you think by leaving a comment.

GamersOnlyOlder is Now Mobile Friendly and Accepting Comments!

I’ve recently installed a new plug-in that makes the website more friendly to mobile web browsers.  If you’re anything like me, you hit a lot of gaming sites while you’re on the move, and this is targeted to help you.  You don’t need to know any special address or anything, the plug-in will auto detect your device.  The aesthetics of the mobile version will be changing, but we didn’t want to hesitate on bringing you the functionality right away.  I’d love to hear feedback on this, so feel free to use our brand new comment system, by creating an account, logging in, and letting us know what you think!

Top 5 Hardest Game Boy/GBC Games

The current series of Top 5 lists that Scott and I are doing in the lead-up to MGC 2010 has been good thus far, but something that we have skipped over entirely has been the portable systems. Hence, I am going to be doing a web-only series of Top 5s detailing what I think are the most difficult Game Boy, GBA, and DS games that I ever played. I would love to include the other portable systems, but my severe lack of experience with them somewhat precludes me from doing so.
